The Project

In 2010, Water For People-Malawi will work with its local partners to provide comprehensive clean water, sanitation and hygiene promotion programs to twenty villages and 5 schools within the Traditional Authorities (TAs) of Makhwira, Kasisi and Maseya, in Chikhwawa, Malawi.

To address their water needs, the 20 villages will receive borehole wells fitted with AfriDev Handpumps. The schools will receive PlayPumps, a novel solution for pumping water that encourages children to help pump water through play.

Additionally, each school will be enrolled in the first stage of Water for People's sanitation program, where they will each receive arbor-loos. Not only does this type of solution improve the sanitary conditions of the school, but it also helps allay children's well-founded fears of traditional latrines.

All schools and communities will benefit from hygiene education programs, and Sanitation as a Business will also take place in these villages—this includes the use of sanitation entrepreneurs who promote composting latrines and the training of of "circuit riders" (i.e., mobile mechanics) to help provide an economic alternative to maintenance for communities and schools.

This project will benefit an estimated 5,000 people per year.
